Abstract

Columns are considered one of the most important structural elements and are responsible for taking loads from the roof and beams and transmitting them to the foundations and from there to the ground. The dimensions of the columns are determined by the value of the loads on them, which usually receive vertical forces towards their longitudinal axis, resulting from the loads of the horizontal beams and the loads of the roofs on them. Columns are exposed to the effects of lateral forces due to winds and earthquakes. Due to the geological location of our country on the seismic fault line and the fact that the buildings are constantly exposed to earthquakes, these tremors cause damage to the columns. For this reason, it is necessary to strengthen the columns that may be damaged in the future and threaten human life and building safety. The main purpose of column reinforcement is to increase the shear strength and bending moment of the column. Reinforced concrete jacketing is the most widely used method for strengthening columns. It is possible to increase the flexural strength of the column by increasing the cross-section of the column. Shear strength and ductility can be increased by wrapping the column with steel belts or strips or by tightening the transverse reinforcement. The techniques used to strengthen the columns depend on the nature of the damage and the repair areas in the structure. In this study, the damage to the columns and the strengthening methods of the columns using different techniques will be examined.
